Iran, six death sentences carried out in public, says radio

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Six death sentences were carried out in public in Sabzevar in north-east, as reported today on state radio. This is the second such incident in less than a week in the Islamic republic.

Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi-Shahroudi, head of the judiciary in January had ordered the suspension of public executions, unless they were authorized by him personally for "social needs".
The radio described the convicts as "bad" people, but has not explained what crimes they are guilty or when the sentences are carried out. Normally
executions in Iran are executed by hanging in prison.
Under the law of Koranic law, Sharia, in force since the 1979 Islamic revolution, murder, rape, adultery, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all crimes punishable by death. Saturday
an Iranian newspaper had written public of the hanging of four murders in the southern province of Bushehr.
